Dramatic collision in Klein Flottbek - Bicyclist experiences broken neck!
To begin with, it appeared that Breen had experienced plain bad luck. He could move all his extremities, showed stability, and was communicative. However, the CT scan revealed the severity of his injury: a fractured cervical vertebra!
As per Volker Wulff (67), the Derby boss, he sustained this common accident for horse riders and motorcyclists. They found out later that Breen had a fracture in the lower section of his cervical spinal cord.
Therefore, Breen was shifted to St. Georg Hospital, where a specialist conducted a surgery on him during the night. The operation was successful. However, Breen will need another surgery, which is expected to take place within the next couple of days. If everything progresses as planned, this should result in a full recovery and no permanent damages. He will be able to return to his sport.
The horse sustained minimal injuries during the accident.
Breen, an internationally renowned horse rider, operates a riding school in West Sussex, which is just a short drive from the Hickstead showground, renowned for hosting the English Show Jumping Derby.
The organizers provided support to Caroline, Breen's spouse, on-site. Despite the accident, his brother Shane (49) intends to compete in the 93rd Jumping Derby on the world's most challenging course this afternoon (3 p.m., live NDR; begins at 4:15 p.m. on ZDF).
Wulff remarked, "Trevor will bounce back. He'll be able to ride again. It's just a bit more complex than we realized yesterday. I heard from the hospital once more: the initial treatment was exceptional."
