Betr Launches Fantasy Picks Game
A sports wagering firm named Betr is stepping into the fantasy sports industry with a new "pick 'em" game that could enhance its sports betting activities in the long run.
Betr Picks is a real money game with binary choices like "more" or "less." In essence, Betr Picks resembles a prop-style daily fantasy sports (DFS) game. Users can select 'More' or 'Less' from a variety of player projections to create a lineup that includes a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 8 players. By correctly guessing 8 picks, users stand a chance to win up to 100 times their initial entry amount, as mentioned in a statement released by Betr, a Miami-based company.
Betr Picks is now accessible in 24 states, covering half the US population.
Betr Picks' Relation to Sports Betting Remains Unclear
Using DFS for success in the licensed sports betting market has been a proven strategy favored by industry pillars FanDuel and DraftKings.
In conventional DFS games offered by FanDuel or DraftKings, players pay an entry fee and construct a squad to outdo a particular opponent or place high enough in a tournament to generate income. Shifts in the DFS landscape have seen smaller gaming firms attempt to entice new customers and those dissatisfied with established platforms.
However, the allegation is that some of these newer DFS businesses operate in states like California, where sports wagering hasn't been legalized, and where opponents argue their offerings are more akin to sports betting than DFS, warranting regulation. It's uncertain whether Betr Picks is intended as a "Trojan horse" to support the operator's entry into fresh sports betting markets.
Established in 2022, Betr operates under two primary divisions—Betr Gaming and Betr Media. The firm is active in Massachusetts and Ohio and holds licenses to provide microbetting in Virginia. Betr intends to launch there at an unspecified time period. Additionally, the company has market access in Indiana.
States Where Betr Picks Is Accessible
Of the states with Betr Picks availability, some support mobile sports wagering, others permit only casino-based sports betting, and some do not allow it at all.
"Betr Picks is accessible in California, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Georgia, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Carolina, Kentucky, Oregon, Oklahoma, Utah, Arkansas, Kansas, New Mexico, Nebraska, Rhode Island, South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, Washington D.C., Vermont, and Wyoming," as per the release.
From the list of states with Betr Picks accessibility, nearly 10 currently allow or are set to allow mobile sports betting. The most optimistic scenario for sports betting in Texas is 2025, and the prospects in California are still hazy.
There's an intriguing takeaway from the cohort of states with Betr Picks availability. Wyoming officials recently urged PrizePicks and Underdog Fantasy, companies that could be perceived as competitors to Betr Picks, to discontinue operations in the state since their offerings resemble unregulated sports betting.
