BetMGM Notices Significant Influence of Taylor Swift on Sports Betting Industry
Taylor Swift has become a major talking point during the 2023-24 NFL season, much to the dismay of some die-hard football fans. Her frequent appearances at boyfriend Travis Kelce's Kansas City Chiefs games have caught the attention of many, leading to an increase in sports betting engagement.
In a recent statement, Christian Cipollini, the trading manager at BetMGM, confirmed that the "Taylor Swift effect" is indeed real. He mentioned how her presence at games has resulted in a surge of interest in Kelce's player props, causing an uptick in bets placed on those wagers.
"The Taylor Swift effect is undeniable," Cipollini said, quoting one of her songs, "Shake It Off." "When she's expected to be in attendance, we see a notable increase in bets on Kelce's props."
And it's not just BetMGM that has experienced this phenomenon. The Chiefs have emerged as the most popular team this season, with the most bets placed and the largest amount of money wagered. Despite this, their frequent victories have not been ideal for sportsbooks.
In fact, the largest NFL payout of the season so far came from a single bet placed on the Chiefs. A bettor wagered $394,000 to win a cool $358,540 when the Chiefs defeated the Miami Dolphins by seven points, covering their spread.
Sportsbook Highlights
Despite the financial setbacks due to the Chiefs' success, Cipollini claims that the first half of the season has been successful for BetMGM. He cites favorable results in primetime games and a high number of unders hitting as the primary reasons.
Furthermore, player props and parlays have been gaining popularity among bettors. Kelce is the most bet-on player in terms of props, drawing in significant attention.
Parlays, which allow bettors to combine several wagers into one bet, have seen a significant uptick. While they can be costly if they win, books love them due to their longer odds and potentially higher payouts.
BetMGM recently paid out an impressive $149,564 on a $50 bet for a 15-leg NFL parlay during week eight. The parlay included:
- Vikings moneyline (-120)
- Dolphins moneyline (-400)
- Jets moneyline (-166)
- Titans moneyline (+115)
- Cowboys moneyline (-303)
- Panthers moneyline (+150)
- Saints moneyline (-131)
- Eagles moneyline (-303)
- Jaguars moneyline (-135)
- Seahawks moneyline (-212)
- Bengals moneyline (+170)
- Ravens moneyline (-500)
- Broncos moneyline (+280)
- Chargers moneyline (-500)
- Lions moneyline (-384)
NFL Betting Trends
Cipollini reported that BetMGM has seen a 26% increase in NFL bets compared to the previous year. After the Chiefs, the Philadelphia Eagles are responsible for the most bets and handle.
Looking forward, the San Francisco 49ers (13.7%), Buffalo Bills (9.8%), and Chiefs (9.4%) are the top three teams most bet on to win the Super Bowl, according to BetMGM. With the event taking place in Las Vegas for the first time, Kansas City boasts the shortest odds at +475. The Eagles follow closely behind at +500, while the 49ers are third at +600.[Your input]
