BetMGM expands NHL partnership to develop hockey-themed casino game
BetMGM has expanded its North American partnership with the National Hockey League (NHL). Through the multi-year extension, BetMGM remains the official sports betting and gaming partner of the Professional Hockey League.
BetMGM said Tuesday that the NHL agreement will allow sportsbooks and iGaming operators to create dedicated VIP fan experiences. BetMGM ads will continue to air during nationally televised NHL broadcasts.
Our partnership expansion with the NHL has been a success. This allows us to improve the BetMGM product and provide our fans with unforgettable experiences in the games they love. ” said BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt. “The NHL is more exciting than ever – a symphony of sportsmanship, teamwork and skating skills. "
MGM Resorts International controls BetMGM in North America through a joint venture with Britain's Entain. BetMGM has been the official sports betting partner of the NHL since October 2018, just five months after the U.S. Supreme Court declared that states are free to enact their own sports betting laws.
The NHL quickly introduced legal sports betting. The league was also the first of the four major leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL) to allow teams to call Las Vegas their home stadium.
The Vegas Golden Knights are the defending Stanley Cup Champions and won the coveted trophy in their fifth year of existence.
NHL games available on BetMGM
Another part of BetMGM's expansion with the NHL, and a slightly more exciting development, is the online casino operator's plan to develop casino games under the league's brand. Interactive slots and table games products are available in the states in which BetMGM operates its online casino platform.
Only six states allow online casino gambling: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Connecticut, West Virginia, and Delaware. DraftKings operates internet casinos in all states except Delaware.
BetMGM has not yet revealed which interactive developer might design the NHL game.
In August, BetMGM debuted Double Play Roulette for remote players in New Jersey, allowing online gamblers to interact with live dealers through the company's operating agreement with Evolution Gaming.
In September, BetMGM announced the debut of a Buffalo themed slot on its iGaming website and app. The games come from Anaxi, the digital gaming division of Aristocrat Leisure.
Last year, BetMGM launched an independent online casino site in New Jersey called Wheel of Fortune Casino. The product is developed by International Game Technology (IGT) under a licensing agreement with Sony Pictures Television.
NHL Cooperation Boom
As the NHL approaches the midpoint of the 2023-24 season, the league will continue to expand its sports betting and iGaming partners in the coming years.
The NHL announced deals with ESPN Bet and theScore last month as BetMGM expands. Both companies are owned by Penn Entertainment.
In August, Penn announced it would sell Barstool Sports back for $1 to Dave Portnoy, a businessman and social media personality who has created numerous regulatory problems for the casino company. Penn spent $500 million to acquire the Barstool brand and use it in its sports betting business.
The University of Pennsylvania will pay ESPN $1.5 billion over the next 10 years to use the sports media brand in its sports betting product, ESPN Bet. theScore is the University of Pennsylvania's sportsbook in Canada.
