Bet at MyBookie on white shark encounters.

Online betting platform MyBookie is now offering wagers on the actions of Great White Sharks as many sports events are halted due to the coronavirus outbreak. Using live monitoring, players can track these aquatic predators and place bets without the option to bet on shark attacks on humans. This creates a novel wagering experience, fitting into a list of history's most peculiar bets.

OCEARCH Shark Tracker

To counter the sports void caused by the pandemic, MyBookie has introduced a unique and fascinating betting opportunity: wagering on the movements of Great White Sharks. By utilizing advanced live tracking, players can monitor the treks of these fearsome deep-sea hunters.

The company has marketed this offering through catchphrases such as "Great White Wager" (Great White Bet) and "Every Week Is Shark Week." In addition to providing alternative entertainment, they hope to engender support for sustainable fishing practices.

MyBookie partnered with OCEARCH, a non-profit organization renowned for creating the most widely used tracking tool. This technology allows for detailed insights into a shark's migration patterns, which players can access through a free online app in real time.

Entertainment, Not Million-Dollar Business

Despite what some might believe, MyBookie doesn't expect these shark wagers to bring in millions. They view this offering as a form of lighthearted entertainment for sports fans and gamblers looking for a summertime alternative. If it does prove popular, they'll be thrilled.

David Strauss, a Montreal-based spokesman for the company, is reportedly a shark enthusiast. He drew inspiration from a website that no longer functions. This site charted the sea turtles' journey from Costa Rica to the Galapagos Islands nearly two decades ago. He discovered the OCEARCH site fitting for his project.

Shark Betting Options

Determining the odds proved most challenging. Knowing Great White Sharks' migration patterns helped Strauss. These sharks are known to migrate vast distances; some can travel up to 2,500 miles and a female Great White Shark swam 12,400 miles in the open ocean in 2005. Factors affecting their journey include water temperature, seasonal changes, reproductive opportunities, and food availability.

OCEARCH utilizes this data to monitor fishing stocks. Geotags, small marine trackers attached to the sharks, transmit signals when they surface. As a result, MyBookie now provides various betting options, including distance traveled between pings, whether a shark will enter a particular water body, and estimations of when the next shark will appear. Less frequent pings create more intrigue for players.

Examples of these wagers were provided, focusing on a shark called "Unamaki." Betting options include a 4:1 chance of it being the first white shark to ping after a certain date and 9:2 odds on the specific days of the week the shark surfaces.

In 2019, according to USA Today, only two fatal shark attacks and 64 unprovoked shark attacks were reported, both below the average of 82. Strauss emphasized that sharks rarely target humans - most attacks occur due to misunderstandings.

The bookmaking sector has a creative streak when it comes to inventing novel bets. Apart from typical sport bets, unconventional options like political, TV, and cultural events are frequently up for grabs, especially in the United Kingdom. Notably, bets on shark movements align with this trend.
