The Freedom to Choose: Fostering Government by the People, for the People - Berlin celebrates 75 years of the Basic Law with a public event.
In the morning, there were still many empty benches, but later they began to fill up a bit: on Saturday, the citizens of Berlin were invited to celebrate democracy at the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law. During the event, Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU), Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens), Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD), and Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) were some of the speakers at the democracy festival in the government district.
NGOs, labor unions, and philanthropic organizations exhibited their work at the three-day extravaganza on the extensive grounds surrounding the Federal Chancellery and the Paul Löbe House of the Bundestag. The 75th anniversary of the constitution's adoption was not only being commemorated in Berlin, but also at the previous seat of government in Bonn.
The Federal Government had bigger booths set up, providing information about their operations, but the event wasn't just about politics. The Ministry of the Interior, which also oversees sports, set up a table football table, the Ministry of Family Affairs gave attendees the chance to create their own T-shirts, and the Ministry of Finance had a wheel of fortune - like finding out what the term "inflation" means.
On Sunday, there's another opportunity to interact with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). During the afternoon, Scholz will join the festival with French President Emmanuel Macron. French President Macron is scheduled to start his state visit to Germany on Sunday.
Germany's last Eurovision Song Contest winner Lena Meyer-Landrut and the band Die Fantastischen Vier are slated to perform at the festival's closing ceremony on Sunday evening.
