Bellagio's first players may have arrived to replace those removed due to Formula 1 racing
These trees are returning to the front of the Bellagio Hotel, or perhaps a new group of trees. A photo provided Monday by the Las Vegas Review-Journal shows at least 16 fir trees, ranging in height from 8 feet to more than 30 feet, lining the street behind the Bellagio fountains.
These may be the trees that MGM Resorts International claims to be removing from the alcove in front of the fountain. The demolition is to free up grandstand space for the inaugural Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, which will be held from November 16-18. The trees were reportedly grown in removable wooden boxes.
Or it could be a new group of trees heading toward the niche. An email sent to MGM seeking clarification and comment was not returned.
In any case, the trees are not intended to replace the iconic shade trees along the road in front of the casino resort. An MGM spokesperson told The R-J on Monday that "the schedule and specific types of street trees are still being determined."
All the trees planted in the area are expected to be installed and taken down each year for the competition, which is expected to be held at least nine more times.
shady move
For 25 years, about 45 trees have been one of the only tree-lined areas on the strip. Since the resort opened, they have provided vital shade from the desert sun for visitors watching the fountain show at the Bellagio.
When MGM released renderings of its F1 Grandstand in November 2022, it became clear that sidewalk trees at Bellagio would have to be cut down due to construction projects.
However, Travelzork reported at the time that an MGM Resorts spokesperson promised the company would "temporarily safely remove the trees in front of the Bellagio Fountains."
Instead, Twitter erupted with outrage when the vast majority of trees facing the road were felled and felled overnight.
