Be cautious of deceptive lottery webpages.
Right now, con artists are tricking individuals into visiting lotto365.tv through emails and mail. This site is a lawless replica of the legitimate German lotto site lotto.de.
Those who receive these communications are asked to input a given identification number on the internet platform. Once they do, their contact information and a supposed victory are shown. To claim this fake win, the victims are directed to buy iTunes gift cards and phone, purportedly to set up a prize distribution meeting. A wary recipient who questioned one such message contacted Lotto Niedersachsen. The organization made it clear that the site and the messages were not from the German lottery or lottery block. Instead, they were scammers, and the guidelines should never be followed.
At first sight, the website appears genuine, since the crooks have merely copied the source site lotto.de and added their own logo. Even the imprint has been fully pirated. But it's not immediately noticeable that it's not the official German lottery's internet site. Naive users may be deceived.
The wrongdoers remain unidentified
A meticulous analysis of the used online address bolsters suspicions about the site's legitimacy. The ending "tv" represents the nation code of the Pacific island state of Tuvalu, making it easy to secretly register a web address. The operators of the website are unnamed, with a middleman service provider stepping in. For a site of the state-owned German lottery companies, this is highly unusual. The official address lotto.de, on the other hand, is registered to Lotto Niedersachsen GmbH and provides contact details.
The registration date is also suspicious. The website was only created in October 2017, whereas the real site has been around for years. The claiming of winnings via iTunes gift cards is also questionable. At the beginning of the year, Apple highlighted that scammers frequently use gift cards for their plotting. The business model of the criminals suggests phishing—a schematic approach to entice people with the promise of winnings and, in turn, con a few gullible users to make the method rewarding. These compensated users then share the codes of the iTunes cards with the site creators. The iTunes account balance is then resold, with the scammers remaining undetected.
Update: When this article was initially released, the website lotto365.tv was unavailable. According to the registration, the domain was banned due to suspected abuse. However, it's possible that the perpetrators will employ this ruse under a different address again.
