Did a boat turn over? - Bavarian canoeist (59) dies in Tyrolean accident

A paddler from Bavaria tragically passed away in Tyrol on Thursday.

As per the authorities, a passerby phoned the emergency services around 4:30 pm on Thursday, reporting that a person was floating behind a canoe in the River Lech near Bach (Austria). Rapidly responding, the Austrian authorities launched search and rescue efforts. Firefighters from Stockach, Bach, Albingalp and Häselgehr, water rescue teams, and a helicopter were among the rescue services that took part in the operation.

The police spokesperson confirmed that the lifeless body of the man was discovered by the rescue team on a sandbank around 150 meters downstream from the Nikolausbrücke bridge. Despite the rescuers' efforts to revive him, they were unsuccessful, and the operation was called off. The empty canoe was later discovered washed up in the same location.

Cause of death undetermined

The police identified the deceased canoeist as a 59-year-old man from Bavaria. He hailed from the Kulmbach district. The investigators currently hypothesize that the man had set off in his canoe (a boat used for the purpose) in Steeg or Hägerau and subsequently capsized, leading to his demise.

An autopsy has been ordered to ascertain the cause of death.
