Barry Manilow deposes King in Las Vegas
He would never tower over Las Vegas like Elvis Presley. But Barry Manilow broke one of the King's famous records.
After 38 years starring in the showroom Elvis built, Manilow, who has won Grammys, Tonys and Emmys for 12 US No. 1 singles, is at the 637th at Westgate this weekend. Officially breaking Elvis Presley's record during this performance.
"Slow and Steady" wins this contest for songwriters (except for this song, which was written by Beach Boys member Bruce Johnston). From 1969 to 1976, it took the 80-year-old Manilow five times longer than Presley's seven years to perform 636 consecutive sold-out shows, most famously first at the International Hotel and then at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel.
Looks like he did it
Manilow debuted in 1985 at the Las Vegas Hilton and booked his first official residency from 2005 to 2009. He moved to Paris Las Vegas for a residency from 2011 to 2012 and then traveled around the world before returning to Westgate in 2018 for his current show.
It’s unclear whether the specific Thursday, Friday or Saturday night show will be Manilow’s 637th. However, it's likely unclear, so not all fans will try to buy tickets to just one of the three shows.
The achievement was recognized at Manilow's concert Thursday, when Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom presented the star with a key to the Las Vegas Strip.
According to Westgate, Manilow will donate all proceeds from this weekend's show to six charities: the Barbara Sinatra Children's Center, Manilow Music Project, Musicians on Call, Three Squares, Victoria Voices and Youth village.
Why stop now?
Manilow begins a record-breaking week by signing a one-year contract extension with Westgate. He added a Valentine's Day weekend during the 2024 holiday season.
“We were selling out night after night,” Manilow said in a Q&A posted this week. "The crowd was fantastic. It was great. There's no reason not to continue playing at Westgate."
Tickets for Manilow's new Westgate show will go on sale on October 6 at 10am via Ticketmaster.
