Online Platforms for Connecting with Others - Barbra Streisand's candid question to Melissa McCarthy stirs online buzz, gain reactions from both stars.
People from Gen Z might think this is a typical case of an elderly person making a blunder on social media. Not so long ago, Barbra Streisand commented on a picture posted by actress Melissa McCarthy on Instagram, saying "Did you try Ozempic?". Ozempic is an injection that some celebrities use for both controlling diabetes and for weight loss.
The Controversial Comment from Barbra Streisand
Streisand removed her comment shortly after posting it. This drew laughter from other users of the platform. One user commented "Grandma Streisand, showing her iPad and red wine energy", while another said "Babs posts a comment like my mom thinks hitting send on a text message means she only sent it to one person". Some people also criticized Streisand for commenting on McCarthy's appearance in the first place. The actress has often talked in the past about her struggles with body image and trying to meet beauty standards.
After her comment spread, Streisand explained what happened. On her Instagram story, she said "Wow! I got on Instagram to see the pictures of the beautiful flowers I got for my birthday! Underneath was a photo of my friend Melissa McCarthy, who I sang with on my 'Encore' album. She looked great! I just wanted to tell her that. I forgot the whole world was reading!" This suggests that Streisand had meant to send a private message but failed due to some technicality.
In the meantime, McCarthy took the incident in stride. She posted a funny video response on her account. "This is only for Barbra Streisand Fan Club members," she titled the clip of herself, where she jokes "Today's realization: Barbra Streisand knows I exist, she messaged me and thought I looked good. I'm winning the day!" McCarthy's casual reaction got her a lot of appreciation from her fans.
