Bally's Lincoln introduces a second non-smoking area at their Rhode Island resort.
Caribbean-themed casino Bally's Twin River Lincoln in Rhode Island is expanding their nonsmoking offerings for gamers wanting a fresh environment free from cigarette smoke.
The Rhode Island-based casino company Bally's has introduced a second smoke-free gaming area to match the smoke-free upper floor casino. This smoke-free section can be found right by the resort's valet entrance on the ground floor.
In a statement, head of Bally's Twin River Lincoln and Bally's Tiverton, Craig Eaton, said, "Bally's Twin River Lincoln now offers ample space and opportunities for those who prefer a no-smoking environment." This new smoke-free zone comes complete with 22 live dealer table games and over 500 video lottery terminals, allowing guests to enjoy their favorite games while avoiding any lingering tobacco smells.
With the addition of these tables and slot machines, Bally's Twin River Lincoln now includes a total of 3,900 slot machines, 91 table games, 23 poker tables, and 27 electronic table games.
Smoke-Free Movement
Casino workers nationwide who are tired of breathing secondhand smoke have joined together in a grassroots organization called CEASE – Casino Employees Against Smoking’s Effects.
While Rhode Island's 2004 Public Health and Workplace Safety Act enables casinos to designate certain smoking areas, these sections must be "physically separated" from nonsmoking areas and feature separate ventilation systems.
In 2021, Bally's Lincoln renovated their gaming venue and introduced a nonsmoking room on the second floor. This smoke-free area includes 845 slot machines and around two dozen table games.
The renovations included a brand new ventilation system for the main floor, where most of the gaming machines and tables are located. Bally's Lincoln's goal is to provide options for both smokers and nonsmokers, with Eaton stating last year, "We want to offer both sets of players what they prefer without discrimination."
Bally's recent announcement further showcases their commitment to this goal.
Fighting for Change
Rhode Island's CEASE chapter is pushing for amendments to the state's 2004 law, aiming to close the casino smoking exemption entirely. Last year, the organization managed to persuade Bally's officials to ban smoking directly in front of table game dealers.
In May 2022, Bally's Twin River Lincoln and Bally's Tiverton called for table game players to stop smoking tobacco while seated. Smokers must now go to designated smoking receptacles on the outskirts of the table gaming area.
Bally's is part of a trio of publicly traded casino companies, including Boyd Gaming and Caesars Entertainment, which face shareholder proposals tod ban indoor smoking at their casino outlets. The activist shareholders are pushing for each entity to carry out assessments on the possible financial consequences of instituting a smoke-free policy.
The American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation and the healthcare system Trinity Health support these shareholder efforts.
Besides their Rhode Island casinos, smoking is allowed to various degrees at Bally's properties in Atlantic City, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Nevada.
