Reversal following "Rust" guilty decision - Baldwin's armorer retaliates.
In October 2021, Halyna Hutchins (42) was killed on the set of the western movie "Rust" when Alec Baldwin (66) accidentally used a live bullet from a Colt .45, which he was handling. It remains unclear how live ammunition made its way onto the set and into the prop gun. The weapons master, Gutierrez-Reed, who was responsible for ensuring safety when managing weapons on the film set, changed a safe gun into a deadly one, resulting in Hutchins' death, as explained in her sentencing by the judge.
Gutierrez-Reed is currently serving time in a New Mexico women's prison for involuntary manslaughter. Her lawyers have filed an appeal against her sentence with the New Mexico Court of Appeals and are also requesting her release from prison. The motion states, "Ms. Gutierrez-Reed seeks her release while she appeals." They argue that if her appeal is favorable, "she would have served most or all of her sentence already, making much of the appeal pointless."
Gutierrez-Reed does not pose a risk to the public nor is there a possibility of escape, their lawyers maintain. Her fate will be decided by a judge.
Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin, the lead actor in the film, will also face charges for the accident in an upcoming trial. The prosecutor's office has accused him of involuntary manslaughter because he didn't check the gun before the film rehearsal and bears responsibility for safety on the set.
Additionally, new investigations reveal that he could potentially have pulled the trigger of the revolver. However, he's consistently insisted that the armorer was the person at fault for the accident. The FBI report places significant blame on him. Baldwin's trial is scheduled for July. If found guilty, he could face up to 18 months in prison.
