Foreign minister ignites fresh debate over traffic lights issue - Baerbock aims to ruffle Lindner's feathers.
Christian Lindner, the Finance Minister (45, FDP), needs to allocate at least 25 billion euros for the 2025 budget. But his actions are meeting resistance from Annalena Baerbock, the Foreign Minister (43, Greens), who wants to spend more.
In particular, Baerbock has proposed budget plans worth 7.39 billion euros to Lindner. This has made him furious because she's supposed to spend just 5.1 billion euros next year.
Svenja Schulze, the development aid minister (55, SPD), is also seeking more tax money than anticipated. She aims to spend a grand total of 12.16 billion euros for 2025, which is around two billion euros more than Lindner's target. The extra billions would be used on international and humanitarian projects.
The underlying message here is that, if Baerbock and Schulze wish to dispense more funds overseas, domestic savings will be necessary. Nevertheless, Green and SPD politicians are cautioning against reducing social advantages.
Both Baerbock and Schulze might have put themselves in a tricky situation with their high demands for taxes.
A challenging spending battle is now anticipated in the coming weeks, where Baerbock and Schulze are likely to face freezing conditions. Lindner has made it explicit that the debt brake will not be altered. This implies that the ministers must comply with the guidelines and substantially reduce their spending requests. The deadline for completion is set for July 3.
Clearly, this plan has not succeeded.
