Call for financial assistance was made by them. - Authorities warned of impounding vehicles of illegal parkers.
A team of investigators from the public prosecutor's office is currently probing three police officers from Hamburg for potential fraud. It's been alleged that these officers have been extorting money from drivers who inadvertently parked their vehicles at construction sites in Hafencity, without permission.
The officers are said to have contacted these people by phone, threatening that their cars would be towed away. But, they could avoid this fate if they paid a specific amount of cash.
On Thursday, Liddy Oechtering, the senior public prosecutor, confirmed that the suspects' homes had been raided by police only last week.
Victims, primarily foreign tradesmen
The majority of those targeted were foreign tradesmen, employed on the construction sites in Hamburg. At least two car owners had even left their reasons for parking and contact details on slips of paper on their car windshields. Nonetheless, they were still extorted.
Bribe amount: 300 euros
The demanded bribe has been approximately 300 euros for each victim. Unfortunately, the method through which the alleged fraud was uncovered has not been revealed.
As soon as news of the allegations surfaced, the Hamburg police initiated a labor law investigation and suspended the alleged offenders from duty. The spokesperson stated that serious offenses could possibly lead to abrupt termination of employment. The suspects are not considered civil servants.
