Hauptbahnhof Hamburg - Authorities apprehend smartphone thieves (ages 19, 20, 32)
On platform 13, three Algerian suspects, aged 19, 20, and 32, disrupted the boarding line to steal a smartphone. They quickly passed the device between themselves before walking away from their target on the train.
Undercover officers from Federal Police witnessed the crime and instructed uniformed officers to apprehend the suspects. When arrested, the stolen phone was recovered and returned to its rightful owner, a Chinese national who didn't initially realize their phone was stolen.
The men were detained at the Hamburg Central Station Federal Police Station before being released. Criminal proceedings were launched against them due to charges of theft, and more inquiries are currently being handled by the Hamburg Federal Police Inspectorate's investigative service.
To combat pickpockets, the Federal Police strongly urge individuals to secure purses and cell phones in their internal pockets to discourage potential thieves. Avoid carrying valuables outside your pants' or jacket's pockets for easy access to the loot. Any theft incident must be reported to the authorities, as pickpockets are known for being highly resourceful.
