Three-year-old Helin vanished in Cologne. - Aunt-accompanied picnic preceded kidnapper's appearance
In the middle of the afternoon, the little three-year-old's aunt snapped a memento shot in the grass near a bright pink picnic blanket. The toddler is gleaming with happiness all over her face, clinging to a cup in her hand.
There's nothing hinting at impending turmoil a few hours later or that the infant would be rescued from the residence of an elderly man (70) 13 hours afterwards...
The two aunts and the child are none of them from Cologne (NRW). Helin and her mother had spent three weeks in the cathedral city to visit Helin's granny. In the evening, the park near the cathedral was still buzzing with activity and many families were present.
Around 8 p.m., one of the aunts and Helin were playing in the park. The girl was zipping around on a pink balance bike when the aunt lost track of her. The aunt frantically started a search campaign for her niece.
Authorities are examining who enticed the child away from the park and how she ended up in the apartment of the possible perpetrator. The police pulled out all the stops for the rescue operation, using a helicopter, dogs, and many officers.
At 9:30 a.m., 13 hours after the girl disappeared, law enforcement officials found the older man's apartment. It was unknown how long the child had been there or if the suspect had done anything to her. They arrested the man and allowed the child's parents to be with her during the questioning.
