The name "Säntis" refers to a prominent mountain. - Attempt to rescue sunken steamship in Lake Constance

Following a previous unsuccessful effort to retrieve the storied steamboat "Säntis" from the bottom of Lake Constance, plans are underway for a second attempt. As per Silvan Paganini, President of the Swiss Ship Salvage Association, all preparations have been finalized in Romanshorn. It is forecasted that the wreck will be hoisted from a depth of 210 meters to just twelve meters between Saturday and Sunday, if no unexpected issues arise. The final hoisting lines have already been brought in. The moment the "Säntis" will surface is yet to be disclosed.

Back in May 1933, the steamboat had become unfit for navigation and was sunk in the center of the lake with Romanhorn in Switzerland and Langenargen in Germany on either side. Disassembling it was deemed too costly, so it was abandoned. Since 1892, this 48-meter-long vessel had been gracing the lake with its presence, capable of accommodating 400 passengers.

The initial endeavor to salvage the sunken passenger vehicle ran into technical issues in mid-April. Nonetheless, the association affirms that work on the wreck was successfully accomplished this time.

The steamboat will be delicately raised using lifting ropes and lifting bags, then guided by the association for transportation. To begin with, it will be placed at a depth of twelve meters off Romanshorn. Eventually, it will be hauled up using the lifting bags before being carefully preserved and potentially exhibited.

The ship salvage association was established in 2023. Since the successful crowdfunding for the recovery of the steamboat, significant advancements have been made in organizing this operation. It is a non-profit organization with over 40 members. Nearly 250,000 euros have already been raised for the salvage mission.
