Fugitive on the run evades capture. - At the bakery, a convicted sex offender used to work.
On the 16*th* of May, a convict was granted permission to exit Meppen Prison (in Lower Saxony) for a supervised excursion. The arrangement was from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and he intended to shop in the heart of Leer.
Lone chaplain accompanied the culprit
While it's customary for at least two prison guards to accompany an individual in preventive detention, this time around, a single prison chaplain was present. The Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice acknowledged this.
A ministry spokesperson: "Preliminary investigations discovered that around 2:15 p.m., the inmate in preventive custody took the opportunity to escape by going through the back entrance of a bakery while using the restroom. The search conducted by the Leer police failed."
The ministry is now keen on discovering why this man, whose identity the police and the public prosecutor's office did not disclose, was only accompanied by a chaplain during the manhunt.
