Marianne Koch: A new perspective - At age 65, people no longer view retirement as the end.
Marianne Koch: Yes, we frequently view ageing as a negative aspect of life which is not accurate.
Why has growing old become a social disgrace?
Once, people were 'old' even as early as 50-60 years old. The younger generation would ridicule those in that age bracket, calling them 'composties' or 'goths'. Slowly but surely, we've established a negative perception of ageing. In societies where this isn't the case, such as Japan, the situation of the elderly is quite different. We are merely at the beginning of this transformation. With increased life expectancy, no one believes that everything ends at 65.
What are the benefits of no longer being young?
Contrary to what used to be, being twenty is not always wonderful. Many young people face loneliness and difficulties in their lives and the world at large. The advantages of old age are that you have relative freedom from professional and other constraints during this period, allowing you to feel like you're making a difference with your life again.
Can you provide an example?
Many individuals revisit interests from their youth as they get older, interests they never had the time for due to life's demands. Starting new pursuits in later years is a great way to explore new territory.
But what if you've never had any hobbies or interests?
Then consider planning the next ten years when you're around 70 or 80. It's crucial not to think: 'That's it now...'. Adult education centers offer such an array of fascinating courses - from beekeeping to Greek history. All we need is the motivation to try something new.
Are you worried about getting older?
No, I'm actually quite old now, and it's been a fairly smooth journey so far. And what lies ahead of me is the encore, which I'm looking forward to with great anticipation and positivity.
Is being positive a conscious decision?
It's somewhat like that. Undoubtedly, it's in my genes. I've also noticed that I respond widely positively to positive experiences. Needless to say, my life hasn't always been sunshine and rainbows. I've experienced highs and lows, some of which were very low. So when I encounter the challenging aspects in my dreams, perhaps it's my subconscious way of coping with them during the day.
What helps when life is less than perfect?
Focusing on the positive aspects of our lives is crucial. Recognizing how safe and secure our home countries are, the availability of healthy food, and the presence of friends and family members with whom we can enjoy fulfilling relationships is what helps. Emphasizing the bright spots in life brings optimism.
What is your grand aspiration?
My ultimate dream is that when I reach the end, it'll be as I envisioned back when I was 25. I answered the question: "How do you want to die?" then: Healthy and contented. That still holds true for me.
Can it be considered contradictory for old people to be healthy?
No, not necessarily. I interpret it as living a healthy life while gradually losing strength. It may not represent ultimate wisdom, but at least it's a feasible plan.
