Priced at up to 47 euros per liter! - Astonishing healing juice injections: Are they genuinely valuable?
"Who doesn't want an easy way to a more healthy diet?" wonders Dr. Amanda Avery, a Nutrition Professor at the University of Nottingham, while discussing the growing popularity of juice shots in a Telegraph report. These colorful, small-bottled beverages come with big promises, from boosting the immune system to promoting gut or brain health.
Expensive shots for better health?
The promises vary from strengthening the immune system, to enhancing gut or brain health, and sometimes even weight loss. But these shots also come with hefty price tags. Rotbäckchen's juice shots cost around 28 euros per liter, while Voelkel's Demeter alternative ranges from 10 to 15 euros per liter. Pharmacies sell Biotta's Vital Shots - made from ginger and apple cider vinegar - for a whopping 47 euros per liter, with private labels in drugstores or supermarkets being slightly more affordable at approximately eight to ten euros per liter.
Do the shots really work?
The promise of these expensive shots is that they're a miracle cure for your health. However, most shots are simply a mixture of fruit juice, often starting with apple juice from concentrate, which makes up about 80% of the liquid. Other juices may be added in small amounts, such as ginger, turmeric or lemon juice. Spices like pepper or chili often find their way in too. Some manufacturers even add vitamins, antioxidants, or beneficial bacteria reported to have health benefits.
"The ingredients are actually quite nutritious and have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits," explains Avery. These benefits may reduce the risk of many diseases, including infections, heart disease, cancer, and inflammatory conditions like arthritis. In addition, the shots usually contain less sugar than a smoothie.
The drawbacks of expensive miracle cures
While the nutrients in the shots can be beneficial, they are not without their problems. Fruits and vegetables lose nutrients when they're pulverized or transformed into juice. Also, natural sugars in the shots get converted into free sugars, which are quickly absorbed by the body. "It's important to check the ingredients because some of them contain extra sugar," cautions Avery.
Furthermore, some juice shots contain much higher levels of vitamins than the recommended daily intake for adults. This could be harmful to health.
The better way to health
Avery recommends consuming at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day to ensure a balance of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. You don't have to stick to fresh produce; frozen, dried, canned or even juiced options work as long as they're not loaded with sugar.
Curiously, you can even make a healthy juice shot at home, saving you money and eliminating artificial additives. Here's a recipe for three 75ml shots:
Ingredients:
- 50 grams fresh turmeric
- 25 grams fresh ginger
- Juice from one lime
- Juice from one orange
- 1 tsp liquid honey
- 100ml of cold water
- A pinch of salt and pepper
Put the juices, peeled ginger, and turmeric in a blender and mix for about a minute. Your homemade fresh juice shot is now ready to drink!
