Tragic incident on ice brings heartbreak - Assistance provider issues caution following bobsleigh crash

A 47-year-old woman named Anke S. appeared before the Suhl district court to face charges of involuntary manslaughter and involuntary bodily harm. Yesterday, she was found guilty for these offenses.

The incident occurred on February 23, 2023, at the Oberhof luge track. Anke S., a trained wholesaler and foreign trader, inserted a double tube ring into the ice channel at a red light. Just a few seconds later, a guest bobsleigh began from a different starting point and crashed into the ice tube.

Mario M. (45), who was sitting on the rod, lost his life in the accident. His partner, Sandy B. (41), riding along as a passenger, sustained severe injuries.

Judge Alexandra Grimm read the verdict out loud and issued a warning to Anke S., indicating that failure to comply with the law during her probation period would result in a fine of €600. The court essentially accepted the prosecutor's proposal.

The joint plaintiff, representing the victim's family, argued for a nine-month prison sentence with probation, while the defense requested no punishment at all for the assistant.

Both the co-claimant and the defense maintained that other responsible parties should have been on trial. They pointed out the lack of a safety system and accused the train operator and the organizer of the guest rides of not taking accountability or having any interest in investigating the incident.

The bobsled (rear left) had collided with the ice tube tire (front right) at 90 km/h
