NS-themed graffiti in Söder area - Artist found not guilty
A painter triumphed in his legal battle centering around a graffiti showcasing Prime Minister Söder as an SS member. The Bavarian Highest Court absolved the individual.
This ruling was announced by a court spokesperson in Nuremberg on Wednesday. The specifics behind the verdict were initially undefined.
The Nuremberg regional court had previously penalized the painter with a fine for using symbols of unconstitutional entities and disrespecting others. The Nuremberg court ratified the ruling in July 2023. The 40-year-old artist, who calls himself Fabian Zolar, lodged an appeal against this.
In the summer of 2022, the artist tagged the graffiti on a barn in Nuremberg's southern region. The regional court asserted that the upper half of the graffiti portrayed Söder in a crude version of an SS uniform, with two occurrences below presenting individuals resembling police officers enforcing violence.
Throughout the trial, the painter denied having depicted the Prime Minister with his graffiti. He explained that the artwork was spurred by a police operation in front of the barn in the summer of 2022, where he encountered police brutality.
The process was set in motion following a criminal complaint submitted by the Bavarian State Chancellery after the graffiti gained notoriety.
