Inundation - Approval granted for €4 billion in assistance for flood relief
Nearly three years on from the devastating floods, North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has given the green light for over €4 billion to be spent on rebuilding efforts. According to fresh numbers from the regional government, these funds have already surpassed the €4 billion mark by March 31st, as reported by "Rheinische Post" yesterday.
Roughly €2.7 billion is set aside for infrastructure repairs in the affected areas, while €800 million is allocated to private individuals and businesses in the construction sector.
"The four-billion-euro threshold has been surpassed," revealed Ina Scharrenbach, the state's building minister (CDU), talking to the paper. Out of the €800 million designated for individuals, €647 million (81%) has already been distributed. Yet, while €544 million has been requested and paid out from the €2.7 billion intended for infrastructure work.
"We're receiving around 100 applications monthly, which illustrates that most applications have already been submitted," shared the Minister. Initially, there were approximately 2000 applications coming in every month. There's a total of €12.3 billion allocated for reconstructions in NRW by federal and state governments. During the disastrous flood in July 2021, 49 people lost their lives in NRW alone; many regions saw widespread damage.
