Jerry Seinfeld has made waves for supporting Israel after becoming involved in a violent conflict instigated by Hamas' assault on Israel. His activism didn't start with this event - he even visited Tel Aviv to help hostage relatives affected by the Islamist Palestinian group. When queried about his visit, he stated, "I'm Jewish" to GQ magazine. He and wife Jessica strongly stand against anti-Semitism online as well.
The ceremony at Duke University brought Jerry Seinfeld an honorary doctorate. Most guests welcomed the news, but this group of anti-Israel protesters disagreed, causing disruption.
Several top US universities have experienced violent demonstrations since Hamas initiated hostilities against Israel. The demands by these activists are for the institutions to break all ties - financial or economic - with Israel. Defenders of Israel condemn these demonstrations due to the underlying anti-Semitic undertones.
