Prior to the critical surgery Heinz had to undergo - Annika Hoenig appearing on Stern TV.

On Monday, Hoenig faced his final chance for treatment. The night before, Annika Kärsten-Hoenig (39) spoke openly on "Stern TV" about her husband's emotions, goals, and deep appreciation.

"Overwhelming fear"

Annika connected from Berlin through a video call to Dieter Könnes (52), the show's host, and updated him on Hoenig's condition. She said, "He's incredibly courageous. He's not giving up. You can imagine how terrified Heinz must be."

Hoenig was well aware of his situation, his wife indicated. "The doctors have explained everything to him. He knows his health condition. He also knows that we'll stay together no matter what we're up against."

Despite the perilous circumstances, the couple maintained a positive outlook. Annika found comfort in her devotion to her husband. "The strength comes from my love for him. Being with him rejuvenates me."

Her children missed their dad as well. Annika struggling but calmly explained the situation: "Our oldest son misses his dad at bedtime." Fortunately, a friend was in Berlin to supervise the children while Annika stayed by Hoenig in the hospital.

"From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you!"

Könnes mentioned that Hoenig lacked health insurance. This fact had major repercussions for the Hoenig family. Once, Hoenig had private health insurance, but he was dropped when expenses became too high. Annika had struggled for weeks to get her husband assessed for government-subsidized insurance, but her efforts were unsuccessful. The social welfare office also refused to cover Hoenig, while private insurance was financially unfeasible. Annika pleaded, "That's 2,500 euros for someone with pre-existing conditions and a retirement pension of only 1,000 euros. It doesn't work!"

The Hoenigs faced surgery costs of around 140,000 euros, which would be covered by donations. Many stars, like Ralph Siegel (78) and Til Schweiger (60), contributed, but countless others also showed their generosity for Hoenig. Annika was overwhelmed by the kindness and expressed gratitude on behalf of both herself and her husband: "There are no words for this immense humanity. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you!"
