An unsuccessful job applicant threatens to leak sensitive data from Star Casino.

The Star Casino in Sydney was given a court order against a man who was trying to extort the casino after it turned down his job application. The man, known as "AB" in court papers, applied for work at the Star in January, according to the Daily Telegraph. He was rejected, though, when a background check found unreported criminal convictions on his record, such as fraud, car theft, violating domestic violence laws, and traffic offences.

Seeking Vengeance

On April 7, a week after his application was rejected, AB emailed the casino's HR people demanding that his former girlfriend, who worked there as a manager, be fired by 10 a.m. otherwise he would share the personal and financial details of their customers. AB shared screenshots of the casino's private data in the email.

He had managed to get hold of this data from a phone belonging to his ex-partner, who used her job at the casino to access the database. Their relationship had recently ended, and AB now appeared to desire retribution both against the casino and his ex.

The Star responded instantly, telling AB that his actions could lead to both civil and criminal charges.

AB continued, saying, "She has to go, or I will put the information out."

The Star acted swiftly, serving AB with legal documents within 48 hours of the email. This week, the Supreme Court of NSW gave a permanent injunction to prevent AB from revealing any data.

Change of Mind

AB never went through with his threat to release the data, and later claimed to have had a turnaround in his attitude.

He emailed Star's lawyers to apologize, maintaining that he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs when the threat was made and couldn't recollect making it.

"I don't remember this at all, I'm sorry. I don't have anything. To be truthful, I was just in a different world. I don't even remember doing or saying this," he wrote.

He sent another email a few weeks later, sharing his experience of a "drug-induced depression" that had made him behave erratically. He also mentioned that he had checked himself into rehab.

He requested that his former girlfriend not face any consequences as a result of his actions. It remains unclear whether AB will be prosecuted for his actions.
