Allegiant Airways reaches tentative agreement with flight attendants
Allegiant Airways (Nasdaq: ALGT), a low-cost carrier that primarily serves its home airport in Las Vegas, has reached an agreement with its 1,900 flight attendants, the company and its union announced Friday. Entered into a tentative five-year contract extension agreement.
The tentative agreement still must be approved by regular members of the Transportation Workers Union (TWU), AFL-CIO Local 577, which is expected to vote later this month.
The tentative agreement includes "substantial wage and salary increases, as well as improvements to retirement benefits, medical reserves, award flight time calculations, holiday pay, annual leave allocations and flextime," according to a joint press release.
Dead pay is compensation for the time an employee spends commuting on an airline flight.
"In addition, quality of life in terms of schedules, working hours and time off has been significantly improved, with both parties agreeing to introduce a minimum daily wage and allow cabin crew to earn commission on the sale of items purchased on board," the explanation continued.
It took more than ten months of negotiations before the low-cost airline and TWU agreed on terms.
“We want to recognize the hard work and dedication of Allegiant and the TWU negotiating team who delivered tangible improvements to our contract on behalf of our flight attendants,” Allegiant President Greg Anderson said in a statement. "This historic agreement reflects our shared commitment to creating a work environment that appropriately recognizes the valuable contributions they make. We look forward to the next steps in this process."
Allegian flight attendants were on the picket lines in August 2017 after six years of negotiations failed to reach an initial employment contract with the airline. An agreement was reached three months later.
Allegiant was founded in 1998. TWU formed the flight attendant workforce in 2010 and began contract negotiations in June 2011.
