Probing into the matter. - Alleged sanitary issues not responsible for fatalities.
A man's death in a business in southern Hesse two years ago is not believed to be linked to the suspected hygiene issues that were found at the time, according to the Darmstadt public prosecutor's office. They stated that there is no clear connection between the man's death and the alleged violations. Hit Radio FFH had previously reported on the matter.
The investigation into the possible breach of the Food and Feed Code is continuing and is expected to take some time, said a spokesperson for the authority.
Initially, four people fell ill due to a listeriosis infection, as a spokeswoman for the Hessian Ministry of Consumer Protection had reported. The source of the outbreak was a fruit and vegetable company that supplied sliced cucumbers, among other things. There were significant hygiene problems found in the ministry's expert report. The patients had contracted the infection between October 2021 and January 2022 at clinics in Frankfurt and Offenbach.
The public prosecutor's office spokesperson has since referred to a new expert report. The report states that the individual symptoms of the patients cannot be definitively ascribed to listeriosis alone. None of the patients had suffered specific harm as a result of the infection, and the investigations did not find that the man's death was hastened in any way by the infection.
