Alex Jones to headline far-right rally near Las Vegas
Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and 50 other right-wing speakers, including comedian Roseanne Barr, will attend a two-day Christian Nationalist conference in North Las Vegas next month. The "ReAwaken America Tour" is expected to bring together 5,000 people at Craig Ranch Regional Park on Aug. 25-26.
The event is part of a national tour launched in April 2021 by Oklahoma businessman Clay Clark and former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Flynn was pardoned by President Donald Trump after he admitted telling the FBI he lied about his conversations with Russian diplomats.
During previous stops on the ReAwaken America tour, speakers promoted QAnon and other conspiracies, particularly those related to the 2020 presidential election, and made derogatory comments about gay and transgender people in the name of God and Jesus Christ.
Jones, a conspiracy theorist best known for his Infowars website, previously claimed that the script for the October 1, 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival, in which 60 people were murdered, was written by "Democrats and their Democrats" , the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Islamic Allies" wrote.
Debate resumes
The city's decision to rent out the amphitheater for the 14-hour event sparked outrage on social media and reignited debates about free speech and the government's responsibility for not allowing hate speech.
"It is abhorrent that this kind of hatred is allowed to be spread in a public space," @marcmcdermont1 tweeted.
Twitter user @Weed702 added: "Word is North Las Vegas is going to be a breeding ground for hate."
The city of North Las Vegas issued a statement Thursday night. It states that "rental licenses are based on content neutrality and equal opportunity criteria" and that the city "does not discriminate against those who wish to lawfully assemble."
As a governmental entity, the City of North Las Vegas has an obligation to uphold the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and ensure that all citizens, regardless of popular or not, majority or minority, traditional or unconventional, have access to public spaces for public expression.
