Between the regions of Lower Rhine and Ruhr - Alert to travelers: Rail shutdowns lasting four weeks in NRW area.
Deutsche Bahn made an announcement about upgrading the 73-kilometer rail line between Oberhausen and Emmerich in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) to a three-track system. This four-week closure will involve numerous renovations on bridges, overhead lines, noise barriers, and canals.
Due to these renovations, several regional lines will be disrupted. The RE 5 and RE 49 between Oberhausen and Wesel/Emmerich, the RE 19 between Oberhausen and Arnhem in the Netherlands, and the RE 44 between Duisburg and Bottrop will all be canceled.
Replacement Bus Service
To compensate for the disruption, there will be a replacement bus service. Some buses will make all stops along the route, while others will run directly without any intermediate stops, like the buses between Oberhausen and Wesel and Duisburg and Dinslaken. However, there will be some restrictions on long-distance services.
More Closures in November and December
As part of the major expansion project, additional closures have been scheduled for November and December 2024: from 1.11. to 24.11.2024, 30.11. to 1.12.2024, and 7/8.12.2024. This line is crucial for freight traffic from the large port of Rotterdam to Genoa. Deutsche Bahn noted that the currently double-track line has reached its capacity limit and requires this critical upgrade.
