Alabama Casino Boats Escape Moorings in Storm, Harm Docks, Bait Store
Two gambling boats detached from their docking stations in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, due to strong winds. Consequently, they caused harm to several nearby docks and a nearby bait shop, according to local TV station WALA.
The proprietors of the boats will be compensated for any damages, local authorities announced recently.
The city then blocked off one of its boat ramps to allow for dock repair work and cleaning up the water.
"We had no injuries," remarked Bayou La Batre Mayor Henry Barnes Sr. as he inspected the aftermath, speaking to WALA. "Thankfully, there were no fatalities or anything of that sort."
With the news of the bait shop's destruction, neighboring bait shop owners rushed to provide help.
"That's the kind of community we have down here," Barnes insisted. "We all aid one another."
Located 27 miles southwest of Mobile, Alabama, the tiny fishing community is renowned for its significant role in Alabaman commercial fishing, particularly shrimp.
The area has previously experienced this issue before, locals informed WALA.
In 2020, during the same time as Hurricane Sally swept by, two additional gambling boats sank in Bayou La Batre. After detaching from their moorings, they went on to accidentally hit docks, as reported by the Louisiana-based news outlet WGNO.
Renovation of Harbor
During the catastrophic Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the docks saw severe damage again.
Originally constructed in the 1960s, these docks have stood their ground through numerous storms. At present, a sizable renovation project is well underway to update the docks and adjacent regions. By 2025, the project aims to enhance the pavement, parking lots, docks, a ramp, and a launch. The city plans for a lot of potential customers to come to the area to buy locally-caught shrimp.
In addition, the city intends to erect a pavilion suitable for special events like weddings and festivals. An outdoor market is also in the works.
Floating Casino Hits Bridge Pillars
In other regions, floating casinos, too, have been set free due to bad weather.
In 2020, when Hurricane Laura lashed Louisiana, a riverboat casino named Grand Palais came undone from its moorings, revealed The Advocate, a newspaper from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Once set adrift, it struck the pillars of the Calcasieu River Bridge on I-10 in Lake Charles. The casino ship was lodged beneath the bridge and necessitated the bridge's closure for a brief period.
The hurricane was a Category 4 storm.
