Zverev remains unsatiated. - Aiming for an Olympic face-off with Nadal in the final.
Rafael Nadal's (37) career ending is hard to fathom for Alexander Zverev (27). He recently knocked Nadal out of the French Open in Paris, winning 6:3, 7:6 (7:5), 6:3. It seemed like Nadal was about to retire after that match.
Nadal stated, "Competing in Wimbledon wouldn't be sensible. Switching from clay to grass and then back to clay for the Olympics, I can't fathom that. My aim is to compete at the Olympics here in Paris, that's where I want to play."
Zverev, on the other hand, believes Nadal won't stop there. "I believe he'll carry on," says the German. "If he had been seeded here, he would've had two or three simple matches and may have been the favorite for the tournament victory. It was just bad luck, facing me. He was much better than in Rome and Madrid. He'll be superb at the Olympics."
Would Zverev prefer another match against Nadal in a few weeks at the same venue? "Yes, in the final. I don't want to face him in the first round anymore."
Nadal didn't openly announce his retirement. "Perhaps I'll say that in two months that it's concluded. But I don't know that yet. Playing tennis is enjoyable for me and traveling with my family."
The match was emotionally demanding for Zverev. His winning strategy: "I regarded this match as a final. The whole tennis world was discussing this one game. You can sense that when you switch off your phone. The tournament is starting now. I hope I can continue playing and make some improvements."
His injury from 2022 also influenced the situation. "I've been awaiting this match for two years. The memories of 2022 are still present." In 2022, he collapsed in the semifinals against Nadal, tore several tendons, and was sidelined for seven months. "I didn't want the last memory of a match against Nadal to be me being wheeled off the court in a wheelchair," said Zverev prior to the duel.
He managed to accomplish this. And perhaps there will be a genuine rematch at the Olympics...
