European basketball league - After rioting, basketball tournament balance sheet shows 50 proceedings.
In a tense start to the Final Four of the Basketball Euroleague at the Berlin Arena, Ostbahnhof, two police officers sustained minor injuries due to violent clashes. 50 preliminary legal proceedings were launched, encompassing charges such as severe public disorder, physical assault and resisting the police's commands. The authorities also confiscated two machetes, a knife and masks during routine searches for identification.
The turmoil began prior to the first game between Panathinaikos Athens and Fenerbahçe Istanbul. Police personnel had to carefully manage a crowd of 3,000 eager fans assembled for entry into the venue. In the midst of chaos, bottles and thunderous pyrotechnics were hurled as some desperate individuals attempted to gain unauthorized access. However, these incursions were swiftly neutralized by emergency responders.
63 people's personal details were documented, leading to their detainment and expulsion from the venue. The games commenced later than scheduled. There was a significant law enforcement presence both during Friday evening's semi-final games between Athens, Istanbul, and Madrid, Olympiakos Piraeus. Despite the high security, no untoward incidents were reported after the matches.
On Sunday, the tournament continues with Athens facing Madrid in the final game and Fenerbahçe competing against Piraeus for the third-place trophy. "Given the events from Friday, there will be extra vigilance on Sunday's events," the police spokesperson told the German Press Agency.
