Additional Females Allege Sexual Misconduct by Vegas Magician David Copperfield - Article
Famed illusionist David Copperfield continues to face accusations of sexual misconduct that date back to the late 1980s. A recent investigation by The Guardian has brought more allegations to light, this time from individuals who claim to have been victims. Many of these individuals were young at the time, aged 15 to 17.
The British newspaper stated that its investigation involved interviews with over 100 people and court and police records.
One of the new accusers, Fallon Thornton, now 38, claimed that Copperfield inappropriately touched her breast during a 2014 performance at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where the magician has been performing for over three decades. Thornton filed a police complaint that was later closed due to "insufficient evidence."
Four other women also shared their experiences with the newspaper, accusing Copperfield of either groping them or making them perform sexual acts during live performances. The parents of one 15-year-old alleged that they witnessed Copperfield touching her breasts on stage.
"Gillian," another new accuser, alleged that she and a friend were drugged before having sex with Copperfield in 1993, rendering them unable to give consent.
Some of the women claimed that Copperfield had promised to help their careers in modeling or the entertainment industry.
Carla, one of the women, alleged that after meeting Copperfield at one of his shows in 1991, when she was only 15, he began contacting her for late-night phone calls. Once she turned 18, they supposedly had consensual sex. She stated that it was her first time.
The article mentioned that a total of 16 women have accused Copperfield of sexual misconduct, but did not specify how many were new allegations uncovered by the investigation and how many were previously reported.
Copperfield's alleged inappropriate behavior happened between the late 1980s and 2014.
Previous Accusations
In 2018, Copperfield was accused by Brittney Lewis, a model, of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 1988. The allegations were published on The Wrap website. Testimonies of sexual assault were made against Copperfield once more; however, charges were never filed.
Another woman named Lacey Carroll accused him of rape in 2007. The federal jury in Seattle investigated the case until 2010 without bringing any charges. Lacey Carroll was later charged in Washington state with prostitution and falsely claiming to have been sexually assaulted in another case.
Copperfield's name was mentioned in a list of individuals associated with the late sex trafficker, Jeffrey Epstein, which was released in January 2021.
Copperfield's Response
A PR spokesperson sent the following statement to the media, requesting it be published in its entirety:
"Everyone who knows David Copperfield will tell you that these recent allegations from one newspaper are the exact opposite of who David is. In fact, David has a history of risking his career to help protect women from powerful predators. Most of these old allegations have already been discredited, and all of them are as false now as they were then. David requested the 'evidence' that these false accusations claim to rely on, but it has not been provided.
"By contrast, every time US law enforcement has investigated such matters, they've been thoroughly explored, and it's been found that there's simply no case to answer. The Guardian's portrayal of David is the complete opposite of who he is, and he continues to support anyone who has experienced any form of abuse or discrimination.
"For the movement to flourish, false accusations must stop," the statement concluded. "David will be discussing the situation with his legal team and will take any necessary steps regarding these false and malicious allegations."
Despite these allegations, Copperfield's shows continue to attract large crowds at the MGM Grand.
