Accused Casino Casino Bank Manager Murder Suspects Face Trial in Argentina.
A trial involving four gang members believed to be responsible for a hit on a bank manager in Argentina is currently underway. The crime took place three years ago at a casino within the City Center Rosario shopping mall in Rosario, leaving the establishment cursed.
The “Los Monos” gang in Rosario, renowned as one of the most prolific drug-trafficking organizations in the country, includes these four individuals: Ariel Máximo "Guille" Cantero, Maximiliano Díaz, Carlos Damían Escobar, and Otniel De León Almonte.
In addition to the assassination they're charged with, these four are facing prosecution for a series of extortions.
Uncalled-for Assault
Cantero, Díaz, Escobar, and Almonte are accused of plotting and killing Enrique Encino, a 64-year-old accountant who happened to be working as a manager at a bank 60 miles away from Rosario. The motive for this unprovoked attack has never been revealed, as it seems Encino was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
As he stood on the balcony, two individuals fired six shots at the casino from a motorcycle. One of these bullets fatally struck him in the head, and he passed away hours later.
Some of the evidence against them came from their questionable decision-making. Díaz, Escobar, and Cantero talked about the attack on the phone despite Cantero's residence in Marcos Paz prison and Escobar's imprisonment in Ezeiza at the time of the incident.
In December 2021, prosecutors petitioned for a 22-year prison sentence for Cantero as the catalyst of the attack, as well as for attempted extortion. The former is being accused of organizing the hit with Escobar, who they sought a 20-year prison sentence for.
The case files demonstrate that Escobar, incarcerated since 2018 for a homicide, conversed with Díaz to plan the attack. They discussed the modus operandi, who would be involved, and which vehicles would be utilized.
For his part in conspiring and illegally brandishing a firearm, Díaz may be sentenced to up to 34 years in prison. Messages found on his cell phone after his arrest just a few days post-attack attested to his involvement and the entire plan.
Almonte could be looking at up to 26 years of prison time. He was allegedly the driver of the motorcycle during the attack.
Drugs, Murder, Extortion
Ortigala, who is not related to Encino's case, was connected to Los Monos due to his involvement in an extortion attempt. Ortigala, aided by the gang, was said to have extorted a businessman in Rosario.
The prosecutor also mentioned the possibility of extortion against the casino.
A conviction against Cantero would not do much to change his situation. An old-time criminal, he's amassed enough prison sentences for other crimes to keep him locked up for almost the next 100 years. From his home in Marcos Paz prison, he's participating in the trial via videoconference.
