Hoops, ball game - Academics Heidelberg are beaten by Alba Berlin.
After a loss in Braunschweig, Alba Berlin managed to avoid a second defeat in the German Basketball League. They won 96-89 (47:45) against MLP Academics Heidelberg with 6689 spectators watching at the Max-Schmeling-Halle on Tuesday night. Even with this win, Alba continues to stay in second place. Johannes Thiemann led the scoring for Berlin with 21 points, while Sterling Brown followed closely with 19 points.
Thiemann, a world champion, returned to the game for Alba, but Hermannsson, their point guard, sat out due to a minor injury. With a depleted team, Alba was missing both centers and a playmaker. This left them in a difficult position.
At first, Alba managed well without these players. Heidelberg took the early lead, but Berlin answered with a 14-0 run to hold a 14-point advantage at the end of the first quarter (28-14). However, as the game progressed, Alba's frequency of turnovers and missed shots increased. Heidelberg caught fire from three-point range, narrowing the gap rapidly.
Soon after the second half began, Heidelberg caught up to tie it at 47-47. The game became tense and evenly matched. Alba found themselves trailing 61-64 with roughly 26 minutes played. The intensity of the game remained high until the end. However, Alba managed to pull ahead 83-96 with just 101 seconds left to play. It was a crucial lead that they were able to maintain.
