Relatives of renowned kayaker Bren Orton worry about his safety. - A world-class paddler goes absent in an Alpine stream.
Over the past few days, 15 kayakers have been on a mission to find the extreme sports enthusiast, Bren Orton, near the Italian border in the River Melezza. With quiet hope tinged with dread, his family eagerly awaits news of his safety. "It's been tough, but we're still holding on to hope," said his uncle, Stuart Kirkham to the Daily Mail.
Do they still believe he could be found? "It's not easy to say after all this time, but miracles can happen," Kirkham added, mentioning how two fellow kayakers from the search party had even arrived from America.
Bren Orton is a renowned whitewater rafter and often shares his thrilling photos and videos on Instagram, amassing over 57,000 followers. His posts consist of stomach-churning footage which demonstrates him navigating through the narrowest of rivers at breakneck speeds and deep canyons - all accompanied by unpredictable currents and jagged rocks. Usually, he posts pictures of his waterfall rides as well.
"Bren mysteriously disappeared"
Maybe you've already heard about the alleged accident in Switzerland where Orton seemingly vanished. The incident supposedly transpired last Thursday around 2:45 pm.
Pyranha, the maker of his high-performance kayaks, reported the incident with deep sadness: "We regretfully announce that Bren Orton met with an incident while kayaking with a group on the Melezza River in Switzerland. He was engulfed by a rolling wave and did not resurface."
A historic record in 2018
Bren Orton made global headlines in 2018 when he scaled a mighty 39-meter waterfall in Mexico in his kayak. At the time, he was only 23 - his feat earned him the second spot on the world record list. However, his prior encounters at Reinbach waterfalls, which had previously caused accidents, made him question himself. "I have to conquer my inner sceptic on the next run," he decided.
Yet, this achievement didn't make him fearless, as he revealed two days before his mysterious disappearance, "But, the other day when I passed a small waterfall in Italy, and the water was very high, it almost caught me. I'm still not perfect, despite my past achievements." As it turns out, his inner adversary tested him once more.
