A woman in North Carolina mistakenly claims a $736,874 lottery prize.
A woman from Cary, North Carolina was accidentally made a millionaire after winning over $500,000 on a digital instant-win lottery ticket.
The unexpected win happened when Cynthia Harris was messing around on the North Carolina Education Lottery website thinking she was playing a free demo version of the Bison Bonanza game. In reality, she had inadvertently purchased a $2 ticket for the game.
Not only was this not any ordinary ticket, it was, as stated in a May 14th news release by lottery officials, "the largest digital instant win since the lottery began offering digital instant games in November."
Harris was instantly awarded $736,874. After taxes, she took home a whopping $526,866. While overcoming odds of 15.5 million to one, she claimed the progressive jackpot game's top prize.
"I was like, 'Wait how did this just happen?'" Harris said incredulously. "It still hasn’t set in yet."
"I am a blessed person," she affirmed.
Striking Luck
Harris isn't the only beneficiary of accidental lottery winnings. Miriam Long, from Christiansburg, Virginia, won $1 million in April after hitting the wrong button during an attempt to buy a Mega Millions ticket.
Long had planned to buy a Mega Millions ticket due to a whopping $875 million jackpot, but she instead ended up with an accidental Powerball ticket with random numbers.
To her luck, those numbers matched the first five balls drawn during that night's draw.
"It was the best mistake of my life," Long reminisced.
Random Strangers
However, the most bizarre occurrence of a lucky accident has to go to LaQuedra Edwards from Los Angeles.
In November 2022, Edwards was happily filling a lottery ticket vending machine with $40 in a supermarket when she was accidentally bumped by a "rude person" who didn't even apologize or say a word.
Edwards described her usual buying pattern as one where she purchases several cheaper tickets. But in the absence of her courtesy, she ended up with one $30 200X Scratchers ticket. She was infuriated by the incident and the fact that the stranger had wasted a significant portion of her lottery funds on a single ticket.
However, she immediately became overjoyed after realizing she'd won a $30 million jackpot after scratching off the ticket's silkscreen latex.
“I almost crashed my car,” Edwards shared, leaving unclear whether she was driving at the time or not.
Regardless, because of her collision with a very inconsiderate stranger, Edwards bought a house.
Conclusion
It appears that "the best mistake" in these cases was stepping into the wrong scenario at the wrong time, accidentally gifting lucky individuals a life-altering reward.
In the meantime, these accidental lottery winners seem like they've truly hit the jackpot. And the best part? No haggling ticket sellers or struggling to save up for a lottery ticket.
So, if you've been in the market for some Cary visits or a new car and are wondering how to win big, maybe you should just attempt to "accidentally" wind up in one of these very lucky situations.
