Shocking accident in North Rhine-Westphalia - A van collides with a tree, leaving it split in half.
As per the authorities, a 29-year-old man was in charge of the white electric vehicle that was heading towards Kleve down Klever Straße around 11:50 a.m. on a Sunday. A 32-year-old man was seated next to him in the passenger seat. The vehicle had seemingly traveled from the Netherlands before the incident.
As reported by the police in Kleve district (NRW), the van swerved off the path at Stegstraße for reasons unclear so far. The Opel Vivaro collided with two trees along the road.
VW gets hit by flying debris
The most shocking moment came when the van crashed sideways into another tree. The impact was so powerful it ripped the vehicle into two pieces.
The driver and the front passenger received severe injuries. The 32-year-old man was airlifted by helicopter to a specialist clinic in Duisburg. The driver got transferred to a hospital in Nijmegen (Netherlands).
A fragment of the wreckage flew towards the VW Tiguan of a 52-year-old man from Erftstadt. The collision resulted in minor injuries for the driver and damage to the car.
The road was closed on Klever Straße for around two hours to allow for accident investigations.
