International Ice Hockey Tournament - A turbocharged launch and aspired goals by the Germans!
In the first period, Harold Kreis' team had the edge in chances. However, Mucich's Yasin Ehliz and Mannheim's Lukas Kälble only managed to hit the post. But then things got wild in the middle third.
Dominik Kahun scored the opening goal for Germany after a pass from Ehlitz and Pföderl. Czech coach Craig Ramsay objected to the goal and called for a review, taking a big risk. The referees ruled in favor of a goal, and a Slovakian was sent to the penalty bench once more. With another player down, Germany found itself outnumbered, and Jonas Müller of Berlin scored from a distance to make it 2:0 (33'). Ramsay deserved credit for this beautifully executed goal.
The Slovaks weren't going down without a fight, and Grubauer had managed to keep his end of the ice secure. But within less than two minutes, the Slovaks tied the score with Martin Hrivik scoring the first goal (37th) and NHL star Martin Fehervary following up (39th/Washington). Several mistakes in the German defense, with Maksy Szuber displaying notable insecurity. Bremerhaven's Lukas Kälble redeemed himself with a goal that put Germany back in the lead 3:2, only 28.8 seconds before the second intermission. What a stunning goal!
The dynamic duo of Ehlitz, Pföderl, and Michaelis stepped up their game, and Mannheim's Michaelis scored from a sharp angle to make it 4:2 (45'). Assists from Pföderl and Ehlitz.
The supposed Slovakian goal (49') was disallowed after Kreis' review, with their coach wrong this time.
Libor Hudacek brought Slovakia back to within one with a goal that made it 4:3 (55'). But Germany's top forward line was at it again. Berlin's Leo Pföderl scored a third goal (57') - and once more on an assist from the impressive Yasin Ehlitz. Pföderl and Ehlitz both ended the game with three scoring points.
Tobi Eder scored an empty-netter to make it 6:3 (59') and Matus Sukel added one more for 6:4 (60'). Philipp Grubauer was honored as the best player of the German team.
