A Spanish poker player's yacht catches fire while carrying 17 people.
On Saturday, a yacht which is believed to belong to a Spanish poker player named Diego Gomez Gonzalez experienced a terrible accident. The luxurious vessel named "Irmao" caught fire and eventually sank off the Spanish island of Formentera. Authorities received a distress call towards the evening, informing them about the massive blaze onboard the yacht.
At the time of the incident, the 98-foot yacht was carrying 12 passengers and 5 crewmembers. Fortunately, all 17 individuals escaped the burning disaster with only minor injuries. One crew member had to visit a local hospital to get treated for burns.
The owner of the yacht, Diego Gomez Gonzalez, wasn't present at the scene when the accident took place. However, the city council of Formentera has credited him as the owner, as mentioned in local media. This yacht is often rented as a charter that costs $58,101 per week.
Afternoon Calamity
This incident occurred in the Cavall d’en Borràs area, a popular location in Formentera. Besides the Tiburón restaurant and Beso Beach that attracted numerous customers, there were many other boats around the burning yacht. Some of them helped in rescuing the passengers and crew members. These individuals quickly jumped off the ship once the fire broke out.
Spain’s Maritime Safety and Rescue Society (MSRS) reported that the flames might have originated from the cockpit area of the yacht, positioned at the stern. The cause of the fire still remains a mystery.
Almost straight after the fire occurred, ships from the MSRS port in Ibiza arrived at the scene. They initiated towing the damaged yacht, attempting to move it away from any nearby vessels. Unfortunately, the damaged hull led to the yacht sinking into the water.
On Sunday, a salvage company arrived on the scene to clean up any potential environmental hazards. They collaborated with the MSRS and conducted an inspection that found some floating residue but no significant contamination.
Over the next few days, the team will continue to oversee the area closely, monitoring for possible spills and clearing up any remaining debris from the boat. The MSRS also pointed out that it is Gonzalez's responsibility to refloat the yacht and tow it to port.
The Sleeping Lion
Gonzalez, also known as "The Lion" due to his fearless battles in the poker world, is a professional poker player from Madrid, Spain. He earned this nickname by wearing a lion costume during the final table of the 2012 European Poker Tour (EPT) in Prague.
Gonzalez started playing poker while he was in high school and later switched to online poker. He regularly participated in Spanish poker circuits, punctuating his poker career with a thrilling series of wins.
Gonzalez's breakthrough in the live gaming world came in August 2011. He came in twelfth position in an Estrellas Poker Tour event in Spain, winning $5,400.
His most significant achievement was a fifth-place finish in the 2012 EPT Main Event, which resulted in him winning $256,189. However, he hasn't been as active in tournaments lately or has only rarely placed among the winners. In fact, his last recorded cash prize was a min-cash of $1,966, which he won in June 2021 by finishing in 66th position in 888poker's Spanish National Poker Circuit Main Event.
