He perceives a substantial threat. - A prominent German manager steps down from ChatGPT.
Upon his departure, Leike shared on Twitter user X, "Leaving this position was one of the toughest decisions I've ever made." His sentiment was then followed by a scathing critique of the corporation's management under the helm of Sam Altman (39).
In his words, safety took a back seat in the organization, prioritizing "shiny products" instead. Leike lashed out at the insufficient investment of time into significant matters regarding impending AI systems. He referred to the safety of applications and their social implications.
"These issues are exceptionally challenging to address," he further stated. His team eventually faced obstacles in obtaining computing resources for "pivotal research." However, securing such resources within the enterprise has become more and more challenging.
"Humanity's downfall"
Leike raised the alarm: "The creation of machines more intelligent than humans is a risky endeavor."
This cautionary statement stemmed from a summer blogpost, where he and OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever (37) co-wrote a piece warning, "The immense power of 'superintelligence' could potentially disempower humanity or even be the demise of humanity."
He reiterated: "At the moment, there's no way of managing or check in on a potentially super-intelligent AI and deterring it from pursuing its own interests unchecked."
Regrettably, this bold declaration apparently failed to elicit the intended contemplation within the company. Leike expressed that he'd had disagreements with OpenAI's management for a while. The most significant issue being a recent, unsolvable impasse. As a result, Sutskever, a co-founder, also bowed out of the Group.
