Meryl Streep makes an appearance in Cannes - A palm tree dedicated to the "female demon."
Top moments are saved for last
Binoche, visibly touched, said, "You've revolutionized how women are perceived in the world of cinema. You've made us laugh, cry, and dream, earning you a permanent spot in film history." The room erupted in a standing ovation for this heartfelt tribute.
Streep responded, "When I first came to Cannes 35 years ago with three kids, I thought my acting career was over. Thank you, dear audience, for not getting tired of my mug so quickly."
Among the celebrity attendees at the opening gala was supermodel Heidi Klum (50), who matched her red carpet ensemble with her dress. The chic actor couple Matthias Schweighöfer (43) and Ruby O. Fee (28 from "Polar") both looked phenomenal. He wore a classy tuxedo complete with glasses and bow tie, while she stunned in a silver, slinky number featuring a center part.
Germany's own Palina Rojinski (39), known for her work in "Nightlife", also attended the event. Her vibrant dress was designed by Munich's Chelsea Jean Lamm. Definitely an attention-grabber!
The opening night festivities launched the 15-day event on the French Riviera. French director Quentin Dupieux (50) premiered his comedy, "The Second Act," starring Léa Seydoux (38) and Vincent Lindon (64).
The 22 films competing for the Palme d'Or include the British film "Bird," starring German actor Franz Rogowski (38), and the sci-fi flick "Megalopolis" by American auteur Francis Ford Coppola (85).
The film festival runs until May 27, with the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès serving as its main venue.
