A dramatic event occurred near the Weser river. - A man perishes in a secluded lake.
Early Friday morning, a body was discovered lifeless by the side of a secluded lake in the Lower Saxony nature reserve known as "Korbinsel." The lake itself is surrounded by difficult to access areas, though it does sit near a well-used dike path running from Dreye to Bremen.
Though the area is relatively inaccessible, it has become somewhat popular with swimmers seeking solitude and rest away from busier areas. What could have happened here this morning?
A passerby alerted the rescue center, whether by noticing a lone swimming gear on the shore or seeing someone in trouble. As soon as possible, firefighters from across the region and the German Life-Saving Society (DLRG) set out to the location. The swimming equipment was in the shallows, close to the dikes.
Divers confirm deceased man
The local fire department's professional divers, as well as a rescue boat from the Dreye branch, were among those who arrived at the lake to investigate. Additionally, several police patrols were called to the scene.
Approximately half an hour later, divers from the Bremen fire station located the body. The individual was later brought onshore to receive first aid. However, even with resuscitation, the man could not be revived. And so, with that news, the investigation was now under the jurisdiction of the local police department.
The lake holds origins from the construction of the nearby A1 motorway, and was once the property of a concrete company. It's surrounded by multiple attraction sites, such as Old Weser and Wieltsee - both situated between Weser and Dreyer Dike.
The DLRG announces that it is crucial to exercise caution around waterways, as even shallow water or submerged rocks can cause injuries to the head or spine. This can be exacerbated further should a swimmer experience a loss of strength or cramped limbs, subsequently resulting in drowning.
This year alone, 378 people tragically lost their lives during aquatic activities, down slightly from 355 in the previous year. 125 others either drowned or were rescued, but went on to survive.
