Perilous procedure in Essen - A major blaze causes damage to an automotive maintenance facility.

On Monday morning, aid workers were summoned to a fire in a mixed residential and commercial building in Essen-Schonnebeck. With the aid of a turntable ladder, they were able to rescue two individuals from the building's second floor. Four occupants of the structure were affected by smoke inhalation. The apartments and a restaurant within the complex are now unusable.

The following emergency was reported at around 3 p.m. that afternoon: an 800 square meter car repair shop in the Bergeborbeck district was entirely engulfed in flames. Initially, several cars and two paint booths were on fire. The smoke plume could be seen rising over Essen's northern districts, as well as over Bottrop and Gelsenkirchen. The incident management team activated the NINA warning app (a smartphone app provided by the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance that sends urgent notifications to the population). Residents in the surrounding area were instructed to shut their windows and doors.

Perilous: At approximately 3:20 pm, several gas cylinders inside the workshop detonated. The fire department employed water cannons, which sprayed about 10,000 liters of water per minute into the hall. In addition to the water, large quantities of extinguishing foam were utilized, considerably diminishing the formation of smoke after roughly two hours.

After five hours, the fire had been brought under control, and the entire operation concluded early on Tuesday morning around 1 am. The hall had partly collapsed and was no longer accessible. There were no reported injuries during the second operation, confirmed a fire department spokesperson.

First cars burned in the garage, then gas cylinders exploded. The result: extreme smoke development. The helpers also used extinguishing foam
