A haven for hamsters in a verdant meadow enclosed by a perimeter.

Field hamsters possess striking coats, are timid night creatures, and are unfortunately endangered. A plot of land in Zülpich aims to be a contrast to today's farming, providing adequate sustenance for these hamsters.

Critters Paraphrase: Non-human creatures are being discussed. - A haven for hamsters in a verdant meadow enclosed by a perimeter.

A tiny hamster, confined inside a transport box, stoops upright, holds its ground against the plastic enclosure, and hastens across the straw. Its release into the wild won't be much longer—on a Tuesday, the district of Euskirchen initiated a reintroduction endeavor for the endangered species on a field close to Zülpich. A total of 98 hamsters are planned for this site, and twelve were released on Tuesday. An extended period of breeding in a breeding center in Metelen in Münsterland nurtured this last population.

These uncommon creatures are provided with a sanctuary within the enclosed field, measuring 5.5 hectares. The crops of cereals and legumes are planted here. Only late in October, mowing occurs, when these hamsters tend to hibernate. A fence encircles the area to prevent foxes, dogs, and cats from threatening the nocturnal rodents. Underground, various abodes were installed as homes for the 98 incoming inhabitants, along with some provisions placed inside. According to Euskirchen district, their objective for this reintroduction initiative is to cultivate an autonomous population.

These furry creatures reside in tunnels beneath fields, scavenging for food. Unfortunately, there are no longer sufficient grains left on heavily tended fields. Moreover, such thoroughly mown fields offer no hiding spots for the nighttime creatures. In the field near Zülpich, west of Bonn, all of this should be different.

NRW's Environment Minister, Oliver Krischer (Greens), attended the reintroduction on Tuesday. "This project is also sort of a showcase event," he mentioned. Certainly, with their charming spotted fur, hamsters hold significance as symbols for wildlife conservation.

To the District Administrator of Euskirchen, Markus Ramers (SPD), "these hamsters symbolize that species conservation isn't a trivial matter." The district has invested seven years of preparatory work into this project. Farmers ally with this reintroduction effort. Numerous years of surveying have been underway. The released animals were sourced from the progeny of the last wild hamsters from Zülpich, captured between 2015 and 2017, and are now being returned to their native soil. Similarly, field hamsters have been resurrected into the wild in Pulheim, Rommerskirchen, and Aachen in recent years.
