On October 13, 2023, the trial for 30-year-old Besard H. started at the Court of Frankenthal, Rhineland-Palatinate. He is accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm that resulted in death. Handcuffed, he was escorted from the U-Holding cell to the courtroom. The handcuffs remained on, as the judge noted he was "unruly" in the cell, warranting this unusual step.
Prosecutors believe Besard H. struck Jobcenter employee Axel A. (57) multiple times in the face at the main station on September 14, 2023. A. had just concluded his lunch at the station and planned to return to his office, but he never did.
Immediately following the assault, Axel A. phoned his girlfriend, Christina, who testified in court: "Something's happened, I got hit in the face," Christina said. She rushed A. to the hospital. Unfortunately, his arrival came too late as Axel A. passed away two days later.
According to doctors, the blows to the head caused a critical brain hemorrhage in Axel A., coupled with an undiagnosed leukemia that led to his death.
The police published a picture of the Jobcenter employee a few days after the incident, requesting witnesses. On December 3, 2023, Besard H. was apprehended, and the prosecutors are confident: He was the offender who assaulted the Jobcenter employee.
"My issues began in elementary school," Besard H. stated as the trial opened. At age 13, he tried drugs for the first time - hash, then cocaine, then amphetamines. Responding to the inquiry about his cleanliness in prison or continued drug use, H. chose not to answer. "Respond sufficiently," the judge ordered.
Besard H. hails from Neustadt an der Weinstraße and is the father of three children, residing apart from his children's mother. He also has no contact with his children.
"My troubles started in elementary school," said Besard H. as the trial commenced. He experimented with drugs at 13, first opting for hash, then moving on to cocaine, and eventually, amphetamines. He refused to answer in relation to his prison drug status, to which the judge responded, "Reply adequately."
Besard H. has a lengthy criminal history and is recognized by the police. He declines to speak about the charges made against him.
The trial is ongoing.
