Saxony's Switzerland: A Stunning Landscape - "A contestant from 'The Taste' now prepares meals in the cabin near the lake."

Rathen, a popular spa town in Saxony, lies in the heart of Saxon Switzerland National Park. It's home to the famous Bastei Bridge, outdoor performances of Karl May's adventures at the Felsenbühne theater, and tranquil Amselsee where tourists can row across an enchanting forest lake surrounded by imposing cliffs.

A snack bar, which had been dormant for years, sits by the lake. When Tourismus und Entwicklungs GmbH Rathen sought a tenant to reinvigorate the spot, Verena Leister and her husband Philipp, who hail from a nearby village, took up the challenge.

An accomplished chef, Verena is celebrated for her gourmet dishes and nourishes guests and stars at the Dresden Film Nights. She also crafts recipes for Kaufland and frequently appears on YouTube's "Verena kocht" channel. So, why a change of pace with simple dishes like bratwurst and chips?

"It doesn't always need to be fancy," Verena muses. "I maintain the same high standards across everything, even for simple meals. Our ingredients are locally sourced, and we offer a few outstanding specials."

Verena and Philipp revamped the old sales shack at Amselsee in just three and a half weeks, transforming it into "Wanderrast am Amselsee." It now serves Verena's own creations in addition to standard snacks. Indulge in fries topped with truffle mayonnaise and parmesan for 6.50 euros. occasional occasions like Mother's Day, they feature salmon rolls with Asian mayo.
