Berlin Residence for Academia - A blaze ensued from a bicycle battery.
At 11:20 p.m., a massive fire erupted on the 13th floor of a student apartment building in the Lichtenberg district of Berlin. The resident and his neighbors from the same floor managed to escape just in time. Meanwhile, other tenants from the building made their way outside and gathered around the burning structure.
Upon arrival, the fire department dispatched 66 firefighters to tackle the blaze. As per Rolf Erbe, a spokesperson for the fire department, the fire was caused by the battery of an e-bike being charged in the burning apartment. Nearby objects ignited, spread, and caused the fire to grow out of control.
Six individuals received emergency medical attention at the scene, including the apartment resident. None of them had to be taken to the hospital. The police are currently investigating the incident. Sadly, the damaged apartment is no longer fit for habitation.
Erbe added, "We are witnessing an increasing number of fires caused by these types of batteries." To prevent similar accidents, users should refrain from charging such devices in their homes, especially at night and unsupervised.
